Reader Review: Draft/FCB Toronto

Pros:

  • They’ve got some intresting clients and if you are lucky enough to do some real work on them, you can do some cool stuff.
  • They win awards (if you care about stuff like that)
  • They drink a LOT … at the office
  • Peter Coish is no longer there. Coish was known as a bit of an … asshole, who would terrorize his staff and make people cry. But fear not! He is no longer there. He got his walking papers after the 2006 merger.

Negatives:

  • Political mindfield - if you don’t know “someone” or don’t know how to kiss the ass of the right people you are not going to make it.
  • They pay is crap.
  • It’s part of Draft …

Do they have a separate studio that loses money named Draftworks, specially set up for the presidents boyfriend like they do in NY? Imagine if two restaurants merged (Draft + FCB) into one location. This is akin to having two kitchens in the same restaurant. Is that cost efficient? Does it serve the shareholders and the many people they laid off? Is it ethical? Are there unicorns? Does anyone have real boobs anymore?

DraftFCB NY is EXTREMELY cheap. One example is if you freelance through an agency, the agency charges $50-55 per hour and you get $35 per hour (0 Benefits). Yet if you freelance on your own (not through an agency) they refuse to pay any more than $35 hour - or even split the difference. This causes animosity amongst the troops, and contributes to their well deserved terrible reputation.

Plus they lose money in Canadian dollars!

Thanks. I just spit shards of mystery gyro meat all over my keyboard. I’ll swap it out when someone goes to lunch.

I think your numbers are a bit off. I did a freelance project for them and they paid me $60/hour. I was recommended by another freelancer who earned a similar rate.

$35 per hour for production, not design work in NYC.

They are a BDA which means part of your compensation is that you get to work for them. Which is how they justify the shitty salaries they pay and get away with it.

I love it when companies give you “the honor” to work for them. As for pay, you earn what you negotiate and you always have the option to say no right?… right?? hello???
