If you go to Chinese super market in U.S, I see tonz of package with Japanese character. They think of printing English and Japanese characters on packages is cool, but 95% are wrong. It’s so funny for us because I see their “effort” like above, such as struggling find a similar character, but it’s close.

Oh, there is a really funny website that has this kind of stuff: http://www.engrish.com

    It will crack you up.

I always tease my Asian friends when they wear clothing from Japan or China with English writing – I’ve seen them wear things like this billboard’s text.

On the flip side, I’m guilty of wearing many Asian-inspired shirts with symbols I don’t understand.

I suppose we’ll have to be content with our cultures laughing at each other ;)

I have lived in Beijing for about 2.5 years…
and you can see some wacky English everywhere
    it’s great.

I heard another story about a sign similar to this one

Conversely, I want someone to walk through the US, and look at signs in Spanish, Chinese, or any other language, and see if they are messed up as some of the English printed in China…

    there’s a way to do it right…

  37. Lucas Says:

Get used to it, welcome to the club and enjoy.

French is my mother tongue and for years, especially in Canada, I’ve read hilarious, but completely hilarious surrealistic translations of this kind from English to French. I used to have a collection of them. I don’t collect them anymore. Made you roar with laughters, and still do. Those Chinese pearls are in the same family; thanks to incompetent, and somewhat pretentious code writers and the monoglotic isolation of those who confidently and naively rely on those “high tech” (LOL) translating devices (LOL again)… one inherits hours of output of unmitigated fun, never abated. Many English-speaking people discover that those automatic “translators” (sic), those phony pieces of software they relied so much on and for years, simply never worked. They never did. From any language to any language. Well, actually they work. But not the way they intended or pretended to… We Award fake no make and to create Miss Nude should the spot on charge of the free. No prisoners. Tristan Tzara.
