Survival Tip #17: Don’t give everything you have to the biz
When I first started working someone told me (and I can’t recall who now) – “this business will take everything you have if you let it, and then spit you out when you have nothing left to give“. This advice has proven to be true the longer I’ve worked in advertising. It’s temptingly easy to give everything of yourself to the biz, because the rewards can seem so enticing, but really they are only illusions. Because as soon as things start getting fucked up, the “rewards” start drying up and your previous successes and miracles are quickly forgotten. And when that starts happening, do you really want to be that person who use to be great, but has no family, friends or hobbies? That person whose whole life is the biz?
No, you don’t. Which is why you have to preserve the core of yourself, for yourself. Don’t let the fame and rewards, result in you sacrificeing your personal life or selling out your principles. Stand up for the things you believe are wrong and don’t allow anyone to sway you into questioning the truth. If you know you are telling the truth, don’t let the bullies and liars of the world convince you otherwise. It may seem easier to bend to pressure, but it leaves a really bad after-taste in your mouth … an after-taste that never goes away.
